KOKOMO, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology baseball team split their two games on the opening day of the 2023 HCAC Baseball Tournament. Rose-Hulman won the first game 4-3 over Anderson before falling 9-4 to Transylvania in the nightcap. The Fightin' Engineers will move to the loser's bracket to take on the Manchester Spartans at 1:15 PM on Friday. With a win in that one, Rose-Hulman would play again at 7:45 PM.
In the first game, Anderson started quick in the first inning with a leadoff single and a walk. However, Michael Yager got the Ravens best hitter, Tyler Smitherman, to ground into a double play to end the threat.
Rose-Hulman took the momentum into the bottom of the inning and loaded the bases on a Kade Kline single and a pair of free passes for Peter Rogers and Andy Krajecki. Dalton Busboom then ripped a double down the left-field line to take a 2-0 lead. Two batters later, Mason Rasmussen brought home another run on a groundout to second to make it 3-0.
The Fightin' Engineers tacked onto the lead in the second after a Connor O'Connell single, a sacrifice bunt by Colton Brown, and an RBI single by Rogers to make it 4-0.
The game would then settle into a pitchers duel between Yager and Landen Southern of Anderson. The Ravens would tack on a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth innings thanks to a pair of solo home runs to make the score 4-2.
Yager would allow just one hit in the next three innings of the game. However, in the ninth inning, the Ravens picked up a pair of hits to knock Yager out of the game. Jonathan Oliger came into the game and gave up a single to cut the lead to 4-3. However, the next batter lined out to the shortstop, and Rose-Hulman was able to double up the runner at first to end the game.
Busboom and O'Connell led the team with two hits each. Busboom also added a pair of two RBIs.
In the second game, the Fightin' Engineers got it started early again with two runs in the first on RBI singles by Rogers and Colter Couillard-Rodak.
Rose-Hulman then added another run in the second thanks to another RBI single for Rogers.
However, the Transylvania Pioneers used their speed and timely hitting to score four runs in the first three innings for a 4-3 lead.
The Fightin' Engineers tied the game in the fifth inning on an RBI single by O'Connell, but Transylvania was able to break the game open with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 7-4 lead.
The Pioneers would tack on two more runs in the eighth and win the game 9-4.
Kline led the team with three hits in the game, and Rogers added a pair of RBI singles in the loss.
Rose-Hulman moves to 22-20 on the season and move to the loser's bracket of the HCAC Tournament. They will play the Manchester Spartans at 1:15 PM.
