Softball Opens HCAC Play with Doubleheader at Defiance on Sunday

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology softball team opens HCAC play this weekend as they hit the road to face Defiance College on Sunday, April 7 at 1 PM and 3 PM. The team's doubleheader against Manchester on Saturday has been postponed due to weather. A make up date will be announced at a later time.

ROSE-HULMAN GAME NOTES:
» The Fightin' Engineers open HCAC play this weekend with a pair of games against Defiance on Sunday.
» The Fightin' Engineers come in at 11-7 after a split against a talented Greenville team falling in the first game 11-3, and winning game two 2-0.
» Rose-Hulman started their season with their spring trip to Florida finishing the week with a record of 6-4 overall.
» The Fightin' Engineers earned four wins against Grove City and two wins against Houghton on the trip.
» Rose-Hulman opens their 22nd consecutive season under head coach Brian Shearer as the Fightin' Engineers look to bounce back from a 7-24 season in 2023 that included a 1-14 record in the HCAC.
» Jessica Newsom leads the team with 25 hits, 18 runs scored, 10 extra-base hits, three home runs, a batting average of .379, and a slugging percentage of .652.
» Aubrey Smith has also made an impact at the plate leading the team with 14 RBIs, and an on-base percentage of .424.
» Phoebe Worstell is the team's leading pitcher with an ERA of 2.28 pitching 40.0 innings with 26 strikeouts this year.
» The Fightin' Engineers have gone a perfect 18-18 as a team on stolen bases so far this season ranking fifth in the HCAC.
» Rose-Hulman was selected ninth overall in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference preseason poll. The Fightin' Engineers received 20 poll points. Phoebe Worstell, Katelyn Sarvis, Jadyn Winkler, and Smith were named Players to Watch.
» The Fightin' Engineers will continue HCAC play on Wednesday, April 10 as they travel to Earlham to take on the Quakers.

DEFIANCE NOTES:
» Defiance enters the weekend at 4-13 overall.
» The Yellow Jackets will travel to Bluffton for a doubleheader on Saturday before hosting Rose-Hulman on Sunday.
» Laney Grimwood leads Defiance in hits (19), extra-base hits (3), walks (8), on-base percentage (.431), and slugging percentage (.429) this season.
» Anika Craft has been the top pitcher for the Yellow Jackets in 2024 with a 2-2 overall record, a 2.45 ERA, and 34 strikeouts in her 7 appearances on the bump.
» Defiance hits the road again next week as they travel to Albion on Wednesday, April 10 for a doubleheader at 3 PM and 5 PM.
