Softball Splits with Hanover After 3-2 Win and 9-7 Loss

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology softball team split with Hanover in a crucial HCAC doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon with a 3-2 win in extra innings and a 9-7 loss.

Hanover opened the scoring in the first with an RBI double, and they added a second RBI double in the fifth to take a 2-0 lead.

Rose-Hulman struck back in the fifth with a two-run home run by Jessica Newsom to tie the game at two.

The Panthers battled back in the sixth with runners at the corners and two outs, but Jadyn Winkler made a diving play on a line drive up the middle to keep the game tied at two.

In the bottom of the sixth, Rose-Hulman loaded the bases with two outs, but Hanover was able to get at of the jam with a line drive double play.

After Hanover scored a run in the top of the eighth inning in extras, Rose-Hulman battled back once again, down to their final out. Winkler ripped a triple off the wall in left field to bring home the tying run, and Caledonia Coleman brought home Winkler on a squeeze bunt that she beat out at first base for the 4-3 victory.

Aubrey Smith earned the win for the Fightin' Engineers, going 6.2 innings with just 1 earned run allowed and 4 strikeouts.

Smith led the team with 3 hits, and Newsom added 2 hits and 2 RBIs.

In the second game, Rose-Hulman opened the game with a run by Newsom after a single and a couple of wild pitches.

The Fightin' Engineers added three runs in the fourth on a two-run double by Newsom and added another on a Hanover error to extend their lead to 4-0. They then stretched their lead to five on an RBI groundout by Coleman.

Hanover responded in a big way in the fifth inning with nine runs on six walks, three hits, and a pair of Rose-Hulman errors to retake their first lead of the game.

The Fightin' Engineers battle back in the final innings with an RBI groundout by Kennedy Michnewicz and an RBI double by Phoebe Worstell.

In the seventh, Rose-Hulman brought the tying run to the plate, but Hanover got back to back outs to close out the 9-7 victory.

Newsom led the team with 3 hits, 2 RBIs, and 2 runs scored. Worstell and Katie Palmer each added two hits in the loss.

The Fightin' Engineers move to 21-15 on the season and 8-8 in the HCAC. They will return to action on Thursday, May 2 as they host Spalding at 5:30 PM and 7:30 PM. They will return on Saturday as well for their Senior Day doubleheader against Transylvania at 1 PM and 3 PM.
