TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference has announced its annual awards for the sport of softball. Rose-Hulman totaled four student-athletes receiving recognition for their accomplishments this season.
Phoebe Worstell and
Jessica Newsom received First-Team All-HCAC honors, while
Kayla Schnippel and
Aubrey Smith earned Second-Team honors for their efforts this year.
Worstell was a standout for the Fightin' Engineers both at the plate and in the circle. The chemical engineering major finished the year ranking second on the team with a .392 batting average, totaling 22 runs, 47 hits, 13 doubles, one triple, two home runs, and 19 RBIs. She finished the year ranking sixth in the conference in doubles. In the circle, Worstell had a team-low 2.89 ERA with a record of 9-7, totaling 82.1 innings pitched with 84 strikeouts. She ended the season ranking fourth in the conference in total strikeouts. Worstell finishes her career ranking fourth in the school record books in career doubles with 34, fourth in home runs with 14, fourth in RBIs with 76, third in career pitching wins with 26, and second in career shutouts pitched with nine.
Newsom was another productive hitter for the Fightin' Engineers and represented the team behind the plate as the starting catcher. The civil engineering major led the team with a .402 batting average, totaling 27 runs scored, 49 hits, 15 doubles, one triple, three home runs, and 19 RBIs. Newsom led the conference in doubles this season and ranked eighth in hits. She currently ranks second in the school record books for career batting average at .400 and third in career slugging percentage at .640.
Schnippel made an impact for the Fightin' Engineers at the plate this season. The chemical engineering major finished the year with a .333 batting average, totaling 12 runs scored, 31 hits, three triples, and 14 RBIs. In conference play, Schippel ranks 4th in putouts with 115, 14th with a .400 batting average, and 16th with 20 hits.
Smith had an outstanding season for the Fightin' Engineers at the plate and in the circle. The mechanical engineering major finished the season with a .389 batting average, totaling 28 runs scored, 42 hits, 13 doubles, one triple, five home runs, and 36 RBIs. She ended the year ranked second in the conference in home runs and RBIs. In the circle, Smith earned a 3.29 ERA with a record of 7-7, totaling 108.2 innings pitched and 62 strikeouts. She ranks third in the conference with nine complete games, second with two saves, and fourth in innings pitched. She tied her own school record for most saves in a single season with two, and currently holds the career school record for saves with four in her time with Rose-Hulman.
The Fightin' Engineers had a successful season, making it back to the conference tournament for the first time in 17 years. The team earned the #6 seed in the tournament and finished the year with a record of 19-16 overall and 10-8 in the HCAC.
