TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Rose-Hulman athletic department will be featuring multiple student-athletes across all of their varsity sports teams this summer in the Fightin' Engineers to Watch media campaign.
Women's track and field's Fightin' Engineer to Watch is sprinter
Rose Talbert as she enters her senior season.
Talbert has had an illustrious career with Rose-Hulman, and she is coming off her second consecutive NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championship appearance. Talbert was named a 2025 First Team All-American in the 400m, as she placed seventh at nationals with a time of 54.62. Talbert is a two-time HCAC Sprints/Hurdles Athlete of the Year, and she has been a part of two HCAC Indoor Championship and two HCAC Outdoor Championship teams across her collegiate career.
The Monticello, Illinois native has enjoyed her experiences at Rose across her time on both the cross country and track and field teams. "I have never had a better coaching staff or head coach than
Shane Mills," said Talbert. "He is always available to discuss my goals during the upcoming season, while pushing me to achieve these goals. This season, my goal is to have fun, enjoy showing up to practice every day to work with my teammates, and leave everything I have on the track before I graduate."
Talbert has become one of the most decorated athletes in Rose-Hulman history, as she has claimed 12 Individual HCAC Championships with 20 top-three finishes. Her name is etched across Rose-Hulman's record book as she currently holds ten school records, which is the most by any athlete in program history. Talbert has also set three HCAC records in the indoor 400m (57.39), outdoor 400m (54.62), and outdoor 4x100m relay (48.39).
The chemical engineering and mechanical engineering double major is currently working on an internship with ADM at one of their flour mills. "I had never heard about the milling process until last year, but I am really enjoying learning about everything that goes into an ingredient that is used heavily in consumer goods," said Talbert.
What Talbert enjoys most about being a student-athlete is the collective shared experience that she and her teammates go through. "I always hear people discussing classes and challenges they face, and I can relate to them because I have had many of those same experiences in my time here. Since the school is small, I am able to see my teammates all the time, and I also appreciate how my coach takes an interest in everyone on the team. One of the reasons I decided to come to Rose-Hulman was because I knew that I could be a part of the track team, where I would be able to connect with people who share the same interest in running that I do."
The Fightin' Engineers will open the indoor track season at home for the Fightin' Engineers Invitational. The meet will be held on Saturday, December 5 at 11 AM.
