TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Rose-Hulman athletic department will be featuring multiple student-athletes across all of their varsity sports teams this summer in the Fightin' Engineers to Watch media campaign.
 
Volleyball's Fightin' Engineer to Watch is outside hitter Greta Carlson as she enters her sophomore season.
 
Carlson had an illustrious start to her collegiate career, where she was named the 2025 HCAC Newcomer of the Year, while hauling in All-HCAC Second Team honors. She appeared in all 28 matches on the year, where she led Rose-Hulman with 332 kills for an average of 3.29 kills per set with a .204 hitting percentage. On the defensive side, Carlson recorded 89 digs, while adding 39 blocks with eight solo blocks.
 
Carlson had a wonderful experience during her freshman season, and she enjoyed going head-to-head with all the teams in the HCAC. "From the moment I stepped foot in the gym for preseason, everyone was very welcoming and encouraging," said Carlson. "The upperclassmen were always willing to help, whether it was with a specific skill in volleyball or with a difficult topic in class. The coaching staff also pushed us to be our best selves in every moment, while relying on each other when times got tough. Next season, my personal goal is to improve in serve-receive and defense while growing as a leader, and my team goal is to win the HCAC Tournament and qualify for the NCAA Tournament."
 
The Austin, Texas native helped lead Rose-Hulman on a nine-game winning streak at the start of the season. During the team's incredible run, Carlson recorded a season-high 22 kills against North Central, and she would add 19 kills one week later against Ohio Northern. She recorded ten or more kills in 20 matches, which includes a 13-kill, 11-dig performance against Mt. St. Joseph.
 
Carlson is pursuing a degree in engineering design, and she is spending her summer learning how to weld and work on circuits with her father, while also doing a book club with her teammates. "It has been fun to catch up with everyone and connect with the freshmen more through our calls this summer," said Carlson. "I love reaching out randomly to see how everyone is doing, which has been a great way for us to stay connected."
 
What Carlson most enjoys about being a student-athlete at Rose-Hulman is the community that comes with it. "Everyone on the team is in the same boat as you, so it makes it easy to connect to each other, while helping through hard times. Volleyball also acts as an outlet to forget about the stressors of the day, and instead focus on the sport and people that I love. Being a student-athlete pushes me to work hard, improve as a leader, and appreciate the little things in life more often."
 
The Fightin' Engineers will open the season on the road against Spalding on Tuesday, September 1 at 6 PM.
