TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology hosts Earlham College in the annual "Battle of the Borders Broadsword Game" on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the football season finale for both schools.
Rose-Hulman will also hold Senior Day for 10 members of the Fightin' Engineer football team prior to the game. This year's senior class includes Spencer Balash, Nick Buchta, Zac Erba, Greg Lee, Kevin O'Dowd, Jacob Sexton, Brian Soller, Josh Sonneberger, Andrew Strebing and Eric Taylor.
The Fightin' Engineers stand 6-3 overall and 4-3 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play, while Earlham has an 0-9 mark entering the finale. Rose-Hulman looks to extend its winning streak to 13 in the Battle of the Borders Broadsword Game after last season's 53-15 victory in Richmond.
Rose-Hulman has established five school team and seven individual school records this season entering Saturday's matchup. Team records include pass completions (280), passing yards (3,198), touchdown passes (29), team total touchdowns (48) and total offense (4,425 yards). Individual records include five marks for Austin Swenson (276 completions; 424 pass attempts; 3,152 passing yards; 27 passing touchdowns; and 3,228 yards of total offense) and two records for sophomore Alec Fisher (72 receptions and 15 touchdown receptions).
The Fightin' Engineer offense continues to rank No. 3 nationally in passing yards (355.3 ypg), No. 16 in total offense (491.7 ypg) and No. 30 in scoring offense (38.7 ppg). Junior Aaron Abbott also ranks third in school history with 159 career touchdowns and 20 touchdown receptions. Defensively, sophomore Kevin Nowak leads the team in tackles (76), interceptions (4) and pass deflections (14).
Earlham seeks its first win over Rose-Hulman since a victory in the 2000 season at Cook Stadium. Brennan Laird and Matt Couch have combined to complete 194 of 350 passes for 2,198 yards and nine touchdowns this season to lead the Quaker offensive attack. Mason Davis (64 tackles) and Lajay Kelly (50 tackles, 5.5 sacks) are the statistical leaders on defense.
