TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology hits the road for Hanover College and the season opening Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference football matchup on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
The Fightin' Engineers stand 2-0 after a historic 74-68 triple overtime win over Illinois College last weekend. Sophomore Austin Swenson was named to the d3football.com National Team of the Week after leading a performance that set 10 school records and tied the NCAA Division III national record for combined points in a game (142).
Rose-Hulman set single-game team records for passing yards (603), touchdown passes (7), total offensive plays (114), total offensive yards (824), all-purpose yards (970), all-purpose attempts (125) and first downs (41). Swenson recorded single-game school records for passing yards (603) and touchdown passes (7), and junior Craig Larew added a single-game school record for kicking points with 14.
Rose-Hulman leads NCAA Division III in passing offense at 493.5 yards per game, and Swenson leads the nation in passing touchdowns (11), passing yards (987), yards per game (493.5), total offense (511.0 ypg) and points responsible for (78). His efforts have also made sophomore Alec Fisher the NCAA Division III national co-leader in touchdown receptions with 5.
Defensively, junior Chris Sander recorded 21 tackles in the Illinois College win to tally the second most tackles in a game in school history. The Fightin' Engineer defense also leads the HCAC in sacks (11), kickoff coverage (+42.3 yards per kick), and passing efficiency defense (126.7). Rose-Hulman also leads the HCAC in fewest sacks allowed (1) and red zone scoring percentage both offensively and defensively.
Hanover stands 0-2 on the season after losses to traditional solid foes Centre (42-17) and Thomas More (45-16). The Panthers are led by the quarterback combination of Trent Downs and Adam Gutermuth, who have passed for 365 yards in two games. Defensively, Justin Magaw (23) and Vince Pfeiffer (20) lead Hanover in tackles.
Hanover will celebrate Homecoming at Saturday's game and will also dedicate the new Alumni Stadium prior to kickoff. The Fightin' Engineers won last year's meeting 38-14 in Terre Haute and have won five of eight contests in the HCAC era.
After Saturday's game, Rose-Hulman will have an in-season bye before hosting Anderson in the annual Homecoming matchup on Oct. 4.
