TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - For the third time in program history, the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's soccer team is ranked as one of the nation's top 25 teams. The Fightin' Engineers, ranked No. 23, will put their ranking on the line when Rose-Hulman takes on Wabash College Wednesday, Sept. 24. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. on the Intramural Field.
The Engineers are ranked in the top 25 for the first time during the season in a poll released by nscaa.com on Tuesday. The previous two occasions Rose-Hulman was ranked were at the end of the 2013 season (No. 21) and in the 2014 preseason poll (No. 22).
In addition to national poll, Rose-Hulman also gained one spot in the regional rankings from a week ago. The Engineers are now ranked third in the Great Lakes Region while Wabash is ranked seventh.
Rose-Hulman comes into Wednesday's contest with a 5-1-2 record. Last week, the Engineers defeated rival DePauw University 1-0 in overtime before falling at Centre College 2-0. The loss was Rose-Hulman's first of the season.
Sophomore Ben Lyon continues to lead the Engineers in scoring with five goals. Junior Dieter Schultz stole the spotlight with his 25-yard blast that lifted Rose-Hulman over DePauw.
Senior goalkeeper Drew Miller ranks 12th in the country in save percentage (.917) and 15th in the country in goals against average (.351).
The Little Giants won their first five games of the season including victories over Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) members Bluffton (3-0) and Earlham (1-0). Last week, Wabash battled to a 2-2 draw with Hanover and a scoreless draw with Franklin.
Wabash leads the all-time series 21-13-2 although Rose-Hulman is 5-0-1 in the rivalry under current head coach Sean Helliwell. The two teams tied 1-1 in 2013.
After the game with Wabash, Rose-Hulman plays its final non-conference game of its season Saturday, Sept. 27 against No. 20 North Park University. The game is slated to begin at 7 p.m. on the Intramural Field.
