TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and Franklin College square off in a key Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader on Tuesday night at 5:30 p.m. at the Engineer Softball Field.
Both teams enter the contest tied for the fourth and final spot in the HCAC Tournament entering this week's play. Franklin stands 17-9 overall and 4-4 in conference play, while Rose-Hulman has a mark of 15-7 and is 3-3 in league games.
Freshman Jenny Miller leads the Rose-Hulman offense with a .438 batting average, 28 hits, 24 runs scored and five home runs so far this season. Junior Jett Bender stands at .383 on the season with 23 hits and two triples, while senior Carly Heibel has a .381 mark with seven doubles and three home runs.
Other starters currently hitting over .300 for Rose-Hulman include junior Marissa Stout at .324 with six doubles and one home run; and freshman Jessica Will with a .320 average and a team-high 10 doubles.
Four pitchers have gained time in the pitching circle, with junior Taylor Lockhart joining Stout with a 6-2 pitching record. Miller has tossed three complete games and Heibel has a 2-1 record in four appearances.
Franklin features one of the league's top offenses, with two starters hitting over .400 and eight at over .300. McKensie Vanosdol leads the team with a .446 average, 37 hits and 12 doubles. Katie Struewing stands at .425 with nine doubles.
Pitching wise, freshman Olivia Paszek (9-4, 2.29 ERA) and Vanosdol (4-4, 3.41 ERA) have seen the majority of the work in the circle. The Grizzlies enter the doubleheader on a four-game winning streak.
After Tuesday's action, Rose-Hulman hits the road for Hanover on Saturday. The Fightin' Engineers have also announced a schedule addition for this weekend, as Rose-Hulman will now travel to Manchester on Sunday at noon for a make-up doubleheader.
