TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology hits the road for Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in a key Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup.
Rose-Hulman stands 4-1 overall and 3-0 in HCAC play, while Mount St. Joseph is 2-3 overall and 2-1 in league play. The Fightin' Engineers have conference wins over Hanover, Defiance and Anderson. Mount St. Joseph has defeated Manchester and Hanover, while falling 16-6 to Bluffton.
Rose-Hulman has relied on its defense for the solid start, leading the HCAC in scoring defense (13.2 ppg). The defense has also forced 16 sacks, 13 interceptions and five fumbles in the first four games.
Sophomore John Kirby leads the defensive statistics with 32 tackles. Kevin Nowak and Alec Thompson pace the squad with three interceptions. Kaelen Garner is the HCAC leader in sacks (5.5) and the duo of Sterling Mitchell and Thompson have a team-high five pass breakups each
Offensively, senior Austin Swenson holds nearly 20 school records entering Saturday's game. Swenson is the career school record holder in pass completions (609), completion percentage (64.9%) and passing touchdowns (66). Senior Alec Fisher has added a career school record 29 touchdown receptions and ranks among the top five in receptions (172) and receiving yards (2,128).
On the ground, the duo of junior Kevin Dufauchard and junior Stanley Hogan III have each rushed for 100 yards in a game this season to help balance the attack.
The special teams effort has been led by three-time HCAC Special Teams Player of the Week Matt Murray. The junior is 2-2 on field goals, 10-11 on extra points, handles kickoffs and averages 40.9 yards per punt this season.
Mount St. Joseph stands 2-1 in conference play and has qualified for five NCAA Division III Tournaments in the last 13 years. Sophomore Garrett Weaver has been one of the top receiving threats in the HCAC this season with six touchdown receptions. Chaiten Tomlin leads the passing attack at 68-115 for 936 yards and 10 touchdowns. Tavon Robertson (41 tackles) and Tyler Hannah (3 INTs) are among the team's defensive leaders.
After Saturday's game, Rose-Hulman returns home to face Manchester on Oct. 15.
