TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology women's track and field team won its fourth Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference indoor championship with a 189-point effort on Saturday at the Sports and Recreation Center.
Rose-Hulman won eight events, recorded five runner-up finishes and added two third-place efforts to win its third women's indoor title in the last four seasons. HCAC indoor championships were claimed in 2011, 2018 and 2019 prior to this year.
Nosa Igiehon led the performance by earning HCAC Indoor Field Athlete of the Year honors. Igiehon won three events, including the high jump (5' 1 1/4") and triple jump (35' 7 3/4") within field events. She also won the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 9.54 seconds.
Rofiat Adeyemi was named HCAC Freshman of the Year after adding one event victory and one second-place finish. Adeyemi won the long jump (16' 3 3/4") and came home second in the triple jump as part of Rose-Hulman's 1-2-3 sweep in the triple jump.
Larry Cole captured his 26th HCAC Coach of the Year honor for his efforts in both leading Rose-Hulman to victory and planning the indoor championship meet. Cole's coaching staff includes
Geoff Wayton,
Liz Evans and
Christy Sherman.
Other HCAC conference champions included
Brooke Schroeder in the pole vault (9' 9 3/4") and
Christina Rogers in the 200-meter dash (27.44 seconds).Â
The 4-x-200 and 4-x-400 meter relay teams also earned conference championships. The 4-x-200 team included
Adekite Oladipupo,
Katrina Agustin,
Emily Peterson and Rogers in a time of 1:52.15. The 4-x-400 team of Peterson,
Dara Smith,
Lois Cheatham and Rogers capped the meet by winning in 4:20.55.
Rose-Hulman added five runner-up performances at the 2021 HCAC women's indoor championships. Second-place finishers included Adeyemi in the triple jump (35' 1 1/4"); Smith in the high jump (4' 10 1/4"); Rogers in the 400-meter dash (1:02.57);
Claire Perkins in the pole vault (9' 5 3/4"); and
Cassie Utley in the shot put (35' 3 3/4").
Third-place finishers for the Engineers included Oladipupo in the 60-meter dash (8.42) and
Kyra Hicks in the triple jump (33' 10").
Rose-Hulman won the championship meet with 189 points, followed by Manchester at 137 and Hanover with 100. Bluffton finished in fourth place, followed by Earlham, Franklin, Anderson, Transylvania, Defiance and Mount St. Joseph.
The HCAC men's track and field championship will take place Sunday Feb. 21 at the Sports and Recreation Center.
