TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology won its 2nd Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship and the 6th league title in women's track and field program history with a strong team performance at the William Welch Track and Field Complex on Friday and Saturday.
Rose-Hulman previously won the 2018 HCAC women's outdoor championship at home and has now duplicated the feat during the 2021 HCAC championships. The Fightin' Engineers also have HCAC women's indoor championships in 2011, 2018, 2019 and 2021.Â
Larry Cole swept the Men's and Women's Coach of the Year awards to increase his career total to 27 in HCAC competition.
The Fightin' Engineers scored 215 points to outdistance Manchester (147) and Hanover (128) to round out the top three finishing positions. Earlham and Anderson rounded out the top five in the 10-team meet.
Rose-Hulman won five individual championships on the weekend, led by dual major award winner
Nosa Igiehon. She was awarded both the HCAC Field Athlete of the Year honor as well as HCAC Newcomer of the Year after winning three individual championships.
Igiehon won the triple jump with a mark of 36' 3 1/2", the high jump with a leap of 5' 5", and the 100-hurdles in a time of 15.24 seconds.
Other conference champions included
Maggie Sheerin in the 3,000-steeplechase (12:29.65) and the 4-x-400 meter relay team of
Emily Peterson,
Lois Cheatham,
Dara Smith and
Christina Rogers in a time of 4:09.76.
Rose-Hulman had nine runner-up performances to earn HCAC event silver medals. Second-place individual running event results were earned by Cheatham in the 400 (1:00.56);
Abi Clayton in the 1500 (5:09.48);
Kaia Johnson in the 10000 (39:49.96 for a school record performance); and
Madison Lindfelt in the 3000-steeplechase (12:32.53). Â
Second-place field event results were earned by Smith in the high jump (5' 3"); Igiehon in the long jump (17' 2"); and
Claire Perkins in the pole vault (10' 4" to rank No. 2 in school history).
The 4-x-100 meter relay team of
Adekite Oladipupo,
Rofiat Adeyemi,
Karen Folz and Igiehon also came home second in 51.29 seconds.
Third-place performances included Adeyemi in the long jump (17' 1 1/2");
Aaliyah Briggs in the javelin (111' 6"); Johnson in the 5000 (19:24.36); Oladipupo in the 100 (13.24); Rogers in the 200 (26.51);
Brooke Schroeder in the pole vault (9' 6 1/4").
Rose-Hulman selected individuals will return to action at the Indiana State University Pacesetter Invitational on Friday.
