TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology hosts the final on-campus athletic event of the spring regular season with a baseball matchup against DePauw University tonight at 7 p.m. at Art Nehf Field.
Rose-Hulman stands 22-13 overall, while DePauw enters the non-conference contest at 14-21 overall and 11-5 in conference play. The Fightin' Engineers are still in contention to host the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament on May 7-9, depending on the results of this weekend's games.
Junior Donnie Waters leads the Rose-Hulman offense with a .373 batting average and has added seven doubles and one home run. Junior Caleb Kissel ranks second on the team in hitting at .338 with 46 hits and eight doubles. Junior Hazen Hamather, sophomore Kevin Jendra, junior Zach Hull, sophomore Drew Schnitz and junior Kody Alayon are also over the .300 mark.
Rose-Hulman continues to lead the HCAC in pitching with a 2.91 team earned run average. Four pitchers have combined for 34 starts for the Fightin' Engineers, with a different pitcher likely to start tonight's game. The team also has eight saves out of a balanced bullpen, led by junior Alec McNally with six saves and a 0.52 ERA.
DePauw stands 14-21 overall and finished the North Coast Athletic Conference regular season at 11-5 in league play. Reid Pittard leads the DePauw offense with a .361 batting average. Lucas Italiano has a .356 average with team-highs of 11 doubles and four home runs. Connor Einertson has matched Italiano with four home runs.
The DePauw pitching staff has a 5.39 earned run average with nine different pitchers starting games this season.
This weekend, the Fightin' Engineers travel to Mount St. Joseph for a three-game series at Midland Field in Batavia, Ohio, starting Saturday. The series includes a Saturday doubleheader at 2 p.m. and a single game on Sunday at noon.
