TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology will host its 2017 regular season baseball home finale against Franklin College tonight at 6 p.m.
Rose-Hulman enters the night with a "magic number" of three to clinch a bid to the HCAC Tournament. The Fightin' Engineers need a combination of (Rose-Hulman wins and Franklin losses) or (Rose-Hulman wins and Mount St. Joseph losses) that total three to secure a spot in next week's four-team HCAC Tournament.
Rose-Hulman also remains alive in hopes of earning the top seed to the upcoming HCAC Tournament. The Fightin' Engineers trail Earlham by two games for the top spot in the conference, and must pass the Quakers in the standings to earn hosting rights.
The Rose-Hulman offense features five starters above the .300 mark in Zach Trusk (.394, 12 2B, 1 HR); David Burnside (.393, 11 2B, 7 HR); Conner Shipley (.344, 5 2B, 1 3B); Brian Thomas (.316, 9 2B, 5 HR); and Ryan Stachowski (.314, 6 2B, 1 HR).
Rose-Hulman has relied on four starting pitchers in 2017. Luke Buehler (2-2, 4.32), Ian Grant (2-3, 4.60), Cody Sunderhaus (1-3, 4.63) and Jonathan Banks (3-2, 5.28) have started 34 games this season. The bullpen has been led by Clayton Mayfield (3-2, 3 saves, 2.25), Stone Brogan (2-0, 4.43) and Chuck Alexa (2-4, 6.14).
Franklin has been led by Sam Claycamp at .359 with 15 doubles and six home runs this season. Nick Wright has added a .299 batting average with 11 doubles and seven home runs, and Frank Podkul provides power with nine doubles and five home runs.
Mitchell Caster paces the Franklin rotation with a 4-3 record and a 2.59 ERA. Other starters have included Jordan Clark (6-0, 2.45, 3 saves), Jacob McMain (5-3, 4.24, 1 save), and Aaron Leming (3-2, 5.20).
